Scotch Plains
Scotch Plains takes its early name "Scot's plain" from the Scottish settlers who established farms on the plains of Elizabethtown's "West Fields" late in the 17th century. It was developed as a stagecoach stop between New York City and Philadelphia and was settled by European Quakers in 1684. Today the town is the third-largest municipality in 9-square miles in Union County and is primarily a residential community that offers a tranquil small-town lifestyle to its 24,000 residents. Only 1.5% of its area is comprised of industry. It's home to a diverse community, an excellent public school system, safe residential neighborhoods, and a charming downtown. A good portion of its acreage is devoted to parks and playgrounds, including part of the Watchung Reservation. Excellent cultural and community recreational programs also distinguish the township.
